GRUMETI SERENGETI RIVER LODGE
Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge
Client: andBeyond
Location: Tanzania
Designed in Partnership with: Fox Browne Creative
Located on a unique oxbow of the Grumeti river, the Architectural philosophy for the re-development of this lodge draws inspiration from the circular ‘swoop’ of the iconic Masai beaded necklace, whilst simultaneously paying appropriate tribute to the distinctive bend in the tributary along which it was originally sited some 25 years ago.
The project broke ground in mid-2020 and served to re-imagine andBeyond’s Grumeti Serengeti Lodge in an entirely new way, swapping the outdated ‘army-style’ tents and heavy concrete bases, for a much lighter, more refined and more environmentally responsible offering. In doing so, the making of these buildings drew from their immediate surroundings, the region’s natural materials, and the extraordinary skills of local Tanzanian craftspeople.
